Owner's Description
James Madison, Jefferson's friend and right hand man, served two terms as the nation's fourth president from 1809 to 1817. Remembered mostly for his involvement in the War of 1812, Madison is the only sitting president to come under enemy fire. Englend had been captuing American ships and impressing the sailors. After diplomacy failed, Madison asked Congress for a declaration of war. The war went badly for the United States, as british troops set foot upon American soil for the second time. When troops entered Washington, Madison and his wife were forced to flee. The First Lady, Dolley Madison, is most known for saving the portrait of George Washington, and Madison himself took charge of a battery in defense of the nation's capital. Madison was forced to retreat and the British burned down the Executive Mansion, which still bears the scars to this day. It was during the War of 1812 that Francis Scott Key penned the Star Spangled Banner, which would later become the anthem of the United States.
