Owner's Description

Tall, slender and soft-spoken, Thomas Jefferson was the first member of a new political party to win the presidency, and oversaw the peaceful transition of power seen to this day. Serving from 1801 to 1809, Jefferson assumed office with the goal of reducing the power of the federal government, but ended up expanding it. He exceeded the limits of his authority in making the Lousiana Purchase, and his opponent's screamed when he sent out the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the new lands. Jefferson's second term was torture to him and he came to hate the presidency so much that he left it off his tombstone. Jefferson died on July 4th, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, on the same day as his former rival, and later friend, John Adams.
