Owner's Description

First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen, our first president served from 1789 to 1797. He was the only president to have ever gotten all the electoral votes and he did this twice. Washington, a Virginia land-owner, took his oath of office at Federal Hall in New York City and set many of the precedents that we are familiar with today. As a compromise between the two developing political parties, he selected Foggy Bottoms as the new site for the nations capital, which came to be known as the city of Washington. Washington died 3 years after leaving the presidency, and was the only president to never have served in Washington, DC.
