Owner's Description

O.103 R3. Tied for finest known of the die marriage with the O.103a Eliasberg coin, but finest known of the die state by 3 points. Lovely coin with original tan toning infused by orange hues, cartwheel luster and clean surfaces. Private treaty with Dave Olmstead of Alpine Numismatics on1/8/2010. Per earlier Heritage cataloger description, "Actually, the die state is an intermediate one between O-101 and O-101a. The obverse displays the crack (as struck) from the rim through star 11 to Liberty's hair curls that Overton notes for the O-101a variety. The reverse, on the other hand, does not exhibit a crack from 50 C, over the olive leaves, to the UNI in UNITED. Overdate Capped Bust Halves are a favorite among the numerous collectors who specialize in this long-defunct series. These coins, however, are very difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades. For example, the 1818/7 Large 8 is represented by only two MS65 coins at PCGS, and there are none finer (9/02). This is one of the most visually appealing and technically sound Capped Bust Halves that this cataloger has seen irrespective of date or die variety. Streaks of copper-orange iridescence are seen on both sides with blushes of steel-blue color around the reverse periphery. Both of these colors overlay otherwise lavender-gray surfaces. Clashmarks (as struck) are evident in the fields, but neither side is marred by a single distracting abrasion. Well centered with an overall sharp strike. Overton's Condition Census for this die marriage reads: 65; 63; 63; 63; 63." Prior Heritage Auction on 11/22/2002, Lot 7223.
