Owner's Description

For the year 1955 another major jump in the production of proof sets with the mint producing 378,200. One major change occurred at the mint halfway through the year 1955. Instead of using the softer polyvinyl envelopes they changed to the mylar or cellophane “flat pack” which was utilized through 1964. This move was a benefit to collectors 3 fold. First it was very durable, secondly it provided good protection for the delicate surfaces of the proof coins and lastly it was chemically inert. The heavy toning from 1954 is not a problem like it was. Collectors now stood a better chance of actually obtaining a gem proof. Hairlines still are around but nothing like they were in earlier years. Cameo’s are still rare to obtain even with the higher number of proof sets manufactured. A brilliant high gem in this year is quite rare to find.
