Owner's Description

Newfoundland 1865 20 Cents
Krause ID: KM#4
Mintage: 100,000
Composition: .925 Silver
Obverse: Queen Victoria

This is a very nice example of the Newfoundland series of 20 Cents silver coinage. Most Newfoundland coins experienced extensive circulation. Newfoundland coinage is fairly difficult to find in the higher grades due to low mintages and the fact that hard coinage was preferred over paper money from 1865 thru 1947 due to multiple bank failures.

NGC gave this coin an XF-45. This coin is well struck and has some very sharp details. The fields are relatively clear, which is unusual for most Newfoundland coinage. The coin has some interesting toning, if you tilt the coin toward the light hints of blue and slightly red tones on both sides. An unusual side note is that this is one of the few coins that I own from NGC that to me appears to be over graded. In my opinion the coin just makes an XF-40. To me an XF-45 should be close to or just shy of AU. Either way it’s still a great example of this series.
