THIS COIN: Hints of lilac, blue and luscious gold toning adorn this Gem beauty touting super clean fields.
BACKGROUND: This is the last year of the Business Strikes for the Trade Dollar series, ironically ending it at the height of its popularity. The San Francisco Mint struck 4,162,000 coins in 1878 (the fourth highest mintage in the series) and were still found as part of commerce in China throughout the 1950s. In Mint State grades the 1878-S is one of the most available. All are Type II/II with some minor reverse varieties.
