Owner's Description

Blast white and should be a 66. This coin is absolutly stunning. It has to be the very very minor scuffing between 4 & 6 o'clock on the obverse. Of the 1960-1963 Franklins, this while hard to find in this grade and higher, is the easiest to locate in gem 65, and while not cheap, it is the most reasonable. After looking at this coin many times, I feel like the "coin counter" damage which is very minimal. kept this coin from a "66" grade. The series ends with this date and with the 1955 the lowest mintage Franklin at roughly 4 1/2 million, this '63-D had the highest with 67,069,292 coins produced. You would think that with this high mintage, there would be thousands of "Gems". Quite the contrary, instead of thousands, there are only a few dozen. Just about every Franklin half date with the exception of two or three "keys" were just about "melted" into extinction. I have read that tens of thousands of original bank rolls were tossed into the melting pot when silver climbed to $50 in 1980. Silver now has been $20+ and backed off only to approach $20 again and once again, these Franklins are meeting their doom at the hands of the "smelters".
