Owner's Description

1838 25C AU58 NGC. B-1, R1. Population (PCGS 10/45, NGC 24/60).<br /><br />Die State I, struck from perfect dies that are free of both cracks and clash marks. Only a single die marriage is known for 1838 Capped Bust quarter dollar, the final and “split mintage” year of the type. Not surprisingly the Seated Liberty design (initially produced on Gobrecht Dollars) was modified for the denomination later that same year. The recorded mintage for this issue was 366,000 coins, although it is probably the case that a number of those were dated 1837. The total mintage is remarkably high for a single die pair.
