Owner's Description

With the Buffalo Nickel having run the statutory minimum of 25 years and with the popularity of the Washington Quarter and Lincoln Cent, the time seemed right to honor Thomas Jefferson with a nickel bearing his bust in 1938. Consequently, the Jefferson Nickel, coming on the 195th anniversary of his birth, became the third circulating coin to bear the image of a historical person. Among his accomplishments, Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s third president. Key events during his presidency are the “Lewis and Clark Expedition” and the “Louisiana Purchase”. An intelligent man and prolific writer, many of Thomas Jefferson’s writings are the basis of law in our nation today. Many years ago I bought this MS-64, 1950-D Jefferson Nickel as a raw coin at a coin club auction because it represents the lowest “circulation issue” mintage of the series with just 2,630,030 coins. Many people in 1950 bought 1950-D nickels by the roll speculating that because of the low mintage, they would become valuable. However, today, with so many coins never entering circulation, there is a good supply of mint-state coins at reasonable prices.
