Signature Set Overview

Set Category: Thematic & Topical Coins

Set Name: High Seas

Set Theme: Coins depicting sailing vessels from the US and every corner of the world

Set Description: I started this set just collecting the Early US Commemorative Coins with ships on them. I figured that since there were only a handful of early commems with ships on them I would finish the set quickly.Years later, I have collected ship theme coins from all over the world. I love the artistry, myriad of shapes of the coins themselves, different metals,ages-periods of history, there are probably hundreds{thousands?] and it has become more fun to me than building a registry set at times.I have them from every continent and will keep trying to find them from as many countries as possible. Also I like to collect different types of sailing ships:skipjacks, schooners, frigates, barques, galleons...etc.etc.If you enjoy coins for either their beauty, artistry, or history, then I hope that you will enjoy looking through this collection. I have tried to add either a comment on the history of the ship, design of the ship, or country of origin {with more than a few personal thoughts and observations mixed in}...I hope you enjoy....

I have spent some time trying to figure out how to best list this collection in some kind of order. A list by denomination would simply not work due to the different currency of all the different countries. An alphabetical list didn't appeal to me because it would leave the United States near the end-and those coins are the ones I started this set with.Since there is no way to put headings in the list and seperate them geographically by region that also seemed impractical. In the end there is no particular order except that I have tried to put most of my favorite ones at the beginning...and just add the rest to the end of the collection as it keeps growing...

2005 SS$20 Three Masted ShipMy favorite coin.I am not a fan of painted coins and was unsure of buying a hologram coin, however the medium is perfect for the sailing ship coin. A slight tilt and change of light while holding the coin can change the mood from one of leaving port under a fiery red/orange sunrise to that of a returning vessel during the deep blue/purple of the quiet late evening{my favorite time to be out on the water}The North America we know today owes its very existence to these majestic tall masted ships..from the first explorers to most of our early commerce.2124904-006 2005 S$5 Ucam PF hologram/$20 silver NGC Canada – 1968 To Date PF 69 Ucam
2006 Canada $20 The Ketch PF69UCAMSecond year of Canada's wonderful Tall Ships Series-$20 hologram coin. Again a PERFECT medium and subject..the holograms really work with the sailing ship/sea theme. The coin for 2006 has a "Ketch"- a two masted ship used mostly as a trading vessel. It's smaller size and keel enabled it to sail easily in coastal waterways and shallow harbours. The sleek design of the ketch is now very popular for pleasure sailing as yachts..2125750-010 2006 $20 CANADA UC PF THE KETCH NGC Canada – 1968 To Date PF 69 UC

1994 PALAU S$1 Clown FishSea travel has had a rich history of folklore including sea monsters, mermaids, giant squid,etc..some have been proven to not be myth at all. In Palau a legend of the EBU GOGO-little people-supposedly inhabiting the island from 1500BC until around 1900AD.These 1 meter tall hominids were thought to have been monkeys by natives descriptions: shambling upright walking, hairy body, jutting ears and little verbalization beyond parroting what they heard. However no monkeys/apes have lived or currently live on the island chain and geologists recently uncovered a massive burial ground with hundreds of 3ft adult skeletons dating back through hundreds of year spans. These little people skeletons have also been discovered in other parts of south Asia & SE Africa-now classified as "proto-pygmys"2124905-010 1994 1 UCAM PF NGC Palau PF 69 UCAM

The obverse shows a lonely lookout upon a long desolate stretch of The Great Wall.On the reverse a Baltimore Clipper, first built by America to outrun the British fleet during our fight for independence. The Baltimores' extra spread of sail and sleek hulls meant that they could "clip" the last inch of wind from the sails. They also proved invaluable to our early shipping/trading with the world. 1925 Norse American MedalThis coin was minted in Philadelphia by a Maryland blacksmith and sent to Minnesota for a 100th anniversary commemoration/celebration for Norse Americans.. I love the viking/norwegian sloop -the Restaurationen on the reverse!! Very low mintage, although this is the less rare "thick" octagonal variety..this commem is considered a "medal" and not a coin, but most early commem collectors try to get an example for their sets{NGC has now given it a slot in the early commem registry but does not give points for it}2161283-004 1925 (none) MS Thick Silver NGC United States MS 62
