Set Theme: Coins minted by various Italian States spanning a wide range of dates from 1296 through 1849. A pleasing assortment of copper, silver and gold.

Set Description: These are a few coins I've assembled over the years from the various Italian States that existed prior to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy in the mid-19th century.

Owner's Description: A small copper coin with a wonderful eagle motif on the obverse. "FELICITAS" on the reverse is Latin for "happiness." Absolutely perfect dark chocolate surfaces and no distracting marks. Owner's Description: Obverse depicts Charles II of Spain, ruler of Naples from 1665-1700. Lion motif on reverse. Initials AG/A on reverse refer to Mint Official Andrea Giovane and Assayer F. Antonio Ariani. Owner's Description: Obverse depicts Charles II of Spain, ruler of Naples from 1665-1700. Owner's Description: Obverse depicts a thorougly Spanish view of the globe in 1684 topped by fasces and a cornucopia. The reverse depicts the coat of arms of Charles II of Spain, ruler of Naples from 1665-1700. Initials AG/A on reverse refer to Mint Official Andrea Giovane and Assayer F. Antonio Ariani. Owner's Description: Obverse depicts a scene of Mt. Vesuvius spewing ash. Obverse legend of "SE SOCIO PRINCEPS" translates as "From Allied to Sovereign" This is a clear reference to the fact that with Charles I as ruler, the Kingdom of Naples - once a "Spanish Province" had become an independent and sovereign nation from all points of view. Owner's Description: A lovely gold coin from the Northern Italian province which was home to my mother's family for generations. Obverse depicts Maria Lugia, Empress of Napoleon. A two year type minted in 1815 and 1821 only.

Owner's Description: Papal coat of arms of Pope Pius VII (PIVS SEPTIMVS). Roman numeral date. An original chocolate brown specimen with no major distractions. Owner's Description: A nice specimen of this large diameter, heavy coper coin depicting the papal coat of arms. Original brown color graces both sides. A few adjustment marks (as made) are evident. Owner's Description: Coat of arms of Cardinal Francesco Galeffi. Sede Vacante indicates vacancy in the Papacy. Roman numeral date. Exhibits characteristics of a specemin strike, though NGC has graded it MS-64.

Owner's Description: This coin, though dated 1780 was minted in 1799 during the French siege of the Vatican Papal City State of Ancona, which was a port on the Adriatic. During the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars Ancona experienced much turmoil. Ancona was captured in 1797 by the French and recaptured in 1799 for the Papacy by the Austrians. The reverse depicts the coat of arms of Pope Puis VI (1775-99). Light wear coupled with appealing original toning in the recesses combine to creat an attract... Owner's Description: The Roman Republic was a short-lived (four months) state established in February, 1849 when the theocratic Papal States were temporarily overthrown by Carlo Armellini, Giuseppe Mazzini and Aurelio Saffi.

The 3 baiocchi coin is a large copper coin dated 1849 with a beautifully designed eagle (the Roman Eagle) standing on fasces surounded by a wreath. The motto "DIO E POPOLO" translates roughly as "God and the people." The reverse is somewhat less artistically executed.
Owner's Description: A wonderful design with a somewhat crude execution that seems to only add to the appeal of this coin.

The obverse depits the Doge kneeling before St. Mark while the reverse depicts the ubiquitous Venetian lion.

Owner's Description: Gold Scudo of Andrea Gritti, Doge LXXVII of Venice from 1523-1538.

A nicely executed design with the obverse depicting the Venetian Lion surrounded by a shield and the motto "SANCTVS MARCVS VENETVS" or "St. Mark, Venice."

The reverse design centers on an ornate cross.
Owner's Description: Federico III D' Aragon (1296 - 1337) Obv: + FRIDERIC T: DI: GRA: REX. SICIL' circled, by two circles of beads. A crowned eagle with its spreaded wings a s., with its retrospiciente head in a decoration made of a ring in 8 segments with little rings outside the junction of the segments. Rev: + DUC'. APUL' t PRINCIPAT'. CAPUA. Aragonese coat of arms inside the same decoration of the front, on the left the letter I.
