Set Description
Often called the France gold Rooster...this coin is more properly known as the "Marianne and Rooster".The symbol of Marianne has very ancient origins. On her head she wears a cap called a "Phrygian Cap"-which was worn by the freed slaves of Rome as a symbol that they were now Roman citizens-free people. Thus the cap became a symbol of freedom/liberty. During the French Revolution in 1789, the french people adopted the wearing of the "Cap of Liberty". This symbol indicated their support of revolutionary ideals-Liberte,Egalite,Fraternite....Liberty, Equality and Brotherhood. This motto can be seen on the reverse of this coin around the edge. During this time the people decided to give name to the capped female figure. It was decided that since she represented freedom for the common people-the most common female name would be used-Marie Anne..later to become Marianne.Today the image of Marianne can be seen from coins, stamps, statues and even a sculpture on the outside of the Arc De Triomphe of a victorious Marianne leading the French army.
