Set Description
Nov. 2005--I started this set just collecting the Early US Commemorative Coins with ships on them. I figured that since there were only a handful of early commems with ships on them I would finish the set quickly. Years later, I have collected ship theme coins from all over the world. I love the artistry, myriad of shapes of the coins themselves, different metals, periods of history in which they were minted and also depict, there are probably hundreds{thousands?] and it has become more fun to me than building a registry set at times. I have them from every continent and will keep trying to find them from as many countries as possible. Also I like to collect different types of sailing ships:skipjacks, schooners, frigates, barques, galleons, junks,catamarans,...etc.etc.If you enjoy coins for either their beauty, artistry, or history, then I hope that you will enjoy looking through this collection. I have tried to add either a comment on the history of the ship, design of the ship, or country of origin {with more than a few personal thoughts and observations mixed in}...I hope you enjoy !

MARCH 2008: -- All I can think is wow when I look at this set. I hope that doesn't seem immodest because it really is a reflection of the astonishment I feel when I look at it. What started out as an aside to my collecting has truly evolved. I have truly found my own niche in numismatics. This collection has the potential to become very large since I have barely tapped into the numbers of SC$'s, conder tokens, medals etc..that have these wonderful depictions of sailing ships on them. I would eventually like to add an ancient coin or two and a bit more gold...but then again I rarely see any ship coin that I don't like.

I have also truly "personalized" this set with a few inventive embellishments. Although I have spent much time researching for the descriptions, the set is arranged to be GALLERY FRIENDLY.
Coins are divided into geographical regions. A map and header have been put into the photo slots to seperate regions....also I have added several smaller touches that you will find within the GALLERY. Each coin has the National flag from its country of origin--some have a second naval jack, olympic flag etc also. I have been fortunate to find several US Postage stamps that coincided with the Early US Commems and put photos of them in a corner also...Scattered throughout are photos, paintings and artist renditions of some of the actual sailing ships depicted on the coins....there are other small touches which I have added on lazy days spent enjoying this hobby, I'll leave you to find and enjoy them yourself...Ladies and Gentleman, the GALLERY is open--take your time and enjoy....

Set Goals
Coins depicting sailing vessels from the US and every corner of the world--all 7 continents including Antarctica..gold, silver, brass, copper, aluminum--and the the graded ones you see are about 1/3rd of the total owned with the sailing ship theme.

View Coin 1962 Canada 10c PL66 CANADA - 1858 TO 1968 10C 1962 NGC PL 66 My first of the set--has nice cameo contrast but the mirrors are a bit week due to some milkiness in the fields. High grade comes from no contact marks or hairlines..
View Coin 1841 HT-21 Daniel Webster Token AU58BN United States 1841 HT-21 DANIEL WEBSTER NGC AU 58 Brown Hard times tokens are an interesting category of numismatics with a large following. Several examples have ships on them, mostly the same ship with either different obv/rev combos. My HT21 and HT22 examples have only slight differences. This coin was a must have-I'm not usually a fan of copper coinage but occasionally I see one that tones blue like this and-wow ,just look for yourself - When light hits this coin directly it Explodes into blue. Unfortunately that makes a glare when taking pics, so a slight tilt of the camera and a little photoshop to express its true color--still nicer in hand
View Coin 1841 HT-22 Daniel Webster Token MS62BN United States 1841 HT-22 DANIEL WEBSTER NGC MS 62 Brown Ht21 and HT22 have several differences-the first and most prominent is a triangular jib sail attached to the bowsprit on HT22-HT21 has none. HT21 has 4 bow lines {stays} and HT22 has only 2 attached to the bowsprit-NOTE- another difference in these coins that I have never seen mentioned in a HT token reference is the flag at the top of the main mast {by the letter T} the HT-22 is doubled to the right and shorter... - I think of these two as the twins..even though there are several differences in design, both have exceptional color for a "brown" coin
View Coin 1893 Columbian Expo MS63 United States 50C 1893 COLUMBIAN NGC MS 63 a fabulous, rainbowed example of this second year of mintage. Originally minted in 1892 for the 400th anniversary of Columbus' voyage, the design was used for a second year to be distributed at the Worlds Fair. I already had the 1892 but after seeing the rich blue rim toning--I knew it had to be added...very handsome piece
View Coin 1955 Tampa, FL SC$ Gaspar Pirate Fest MS65 United States S$1 1955 none Gasparilla Pirate Fest NGC MS 65 A wonderful so-called-dollar from the John J Ford Collection. This coin is from the first "Gasparilla Pirate Festival" in 1955...and held every year since. The fun ceremony held in Tampa annually, has the "last buccaneer" Jose Gaspar captain his pirate ship into Tampa Bay, where he and his krewe capture the city and the mayor of Tampa turns over the Key to the City for the day. A great event, a great history, and a great coin-maybe the finest known example in existence from that first Pirate Fest.. HK-720 is graded as FINEST KNOWN - From the John J Ford Collection-bought at the Stack's auction in March 2007
View Coin 1907 VA HK-347 SC$1 Jamestown Tercenternnial MS63 United States SC$1 1907 VA HK-347 JAMESTOWN TERCENTENNIAL OFFICIAL MEDAL NGC MS PrAg stunning so-called dollar also celebrating an anniversary of Jamestown, but this one the Tercentennary in 1907...Pocohantas bust on the Obverse and two of the 3 ships on the reverse - the original medal and stamp set from the 300th anniversary of Jamestown founding in 1907..a handsome set, stamp picture in upper right insert...
View Coin 1938 DE HK-697 SC$1 Del. Tercentenary MS66 United States SC$1 1938 DE HK-697 DELAWARE TERCENTENARY NGC MS 66 Along with the Early Delaware Commem and a 1938 Swedish 2 kronor commem, the state of Delaware issued this so-called $1 to commemorate the tercentenary of the founding of Deleware by Swedish settlers in 1638.Only 500 of these medals/coins were minted and it is very likely that this is the finest example in existence.Graded as an MS66 by NGC it is the Finest ever graded, and a closer scrutiny of the coin's perfect strike and unblemished faces, it is obviously undergraded as a 66.I was fortunate enough to buy this coin in pristine condition, along with the original bulletin from 1938 distrubeted at the celebration ceremonies.Like its 2 counterparts one side of the coin has the Kalmar Nyckel, the reverse has the Delaware state seal and the names of the original families written on bands that bind the wreath..simply spectacular... - Single Finest known at MS66 grade..and still obviously undergraded since the coin is perfectly pristine without a single blemish..
View Coin 2000-s VIRGINIA Silver Proof United States 25C 2000 S SILVER VIRGINIA PCGS PF 69 UC amazing to think that it is almost 400 years since the founding of Jamestown{I'm sure there will be a new commem for this set in 2007}there were still pirates for almost 200 years after..I think we should petition for a William Teach {Blackbeard} commemorative coin. It looks as if the description I wrote for this coin was prophetic. Seven years after this quarter's minting a Jamestown commem $1 came out.
View Coin 2001 Rhode Island silver United States 25C 2001 S SILVER RHODE ISLAND PCGS PF 69 UC as a native of the Chesapeake Bay area here in Maryland..this is a common sight to me.However long I live here though, I will never grow tired of--or not take a moment to drink in the beauty of a sailboat skimming along the glassy bay surfaces with the fiery orange and red sunsets' reflection on the water.I know this coin says Rhode Island but it makes me think of summer Sundays at Solomons Island Along with the Nevada, this is one of the most beautiful of the state quarter designs
View Coin 1987 Canada John Davis Ship SP68 CANADA - TO 1968 S$1 1987 Special Proof PCGS MS 68 Since there are no mints on the Arctic icecap this commem to British explorer/cartographer/scientist John Davis will have to do.This coin shows one of his 3 "failed" attempts to find a northwest passage through the Canadian Arctic from Europe...although unsuccessful, his detailed maps and log books later proved invaluable to future expeditions - The most challenging coin I have ever photoed. Complete mirrored surfaces and details only show when tilting the coin to refract some light. Cameo appearance is just the splashing of the light on the mirrors, there is no frostiness..
View Coin 1991 Steamship Frontenac CANADA - 1968 TO DATE S$1 1991 STEAMSHIP FRONTENAC NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo A gorgeous PF70 UCam..stunning contrast and deeply mirrored..A Canadian Silver Dollar commemorating the 175th anniversary of the launching of the steamer on the Bay of Quinte in 1816.The reverse depicts the Frontenac sailing on Lake Ontario, the first Canadian built steamship on any of the Great Lakes.. - the only non-sailed coin in the set, included because of the transitional time, it was the first steamship ever on the Great Lakes
View Coin 1958 Canada 10c Bluenose PL66-rainbow** CANADA - TO 1968 10C 1958 Bluenose PCGS MS 66 rainbow although I have another example of this date--in both higher grade and cameo---I could not pass up this beautifully rainbowed coin.,.. - I can never seem to capture the true vibrant colors of these little dimes...
View Coin 2004-S Keelboat Jefferson Nickel United States 5C 2004 S KEELBOAT NGC PF 70 UC Bought 2 of these..one for my Jefferson set and one for a collection of mine that does not appear in any registry..my "ship coin" collection.Have collected all of the old commems with ships{and there are quite a few}the Norse thick and thin "medals" many world coins, Leif ericson..canadian..world coins, euros, state qtrs, and started "austria on the high seas"..a really fun collection I would recommend to any collector just for the fun of it
View Coin 1949 Canada S$1 CANADA - 1858 TO 1968 S$1 1949 NGC MS 62 Newfoundland entered the Canadian federation in 1949.To commemorate this event a special reverse appeared on the 1949 Canadian Silver Dollar. Depicted on the coin is the "Matthew" the ship captained by John Cabot to 'discover" Newfoundland.Below the ship image, the phrase"May the new found land flourish" in latin -
View Coin 1979 Canada Griffon SP68 S$1 CANADA - 1968 TO DATE $1 1979 Canada Griffon PCGS MS 68 Le Griffon was the first full sized sailing ship on the great lakes. This 5 gun Barque made its maiden voyage on Aug 7th, 1679. After an extensive trip across Lakes Erie, Michigan and Huron..it vanished on its return trip, along with the crew--never to be found... - another of the special proof coins with the fabulous finish but a challenge to photo. A creative/unorthodox method yielded attractive results..

It is a flat bottomed, shallow-draft schooner designed to pass through canal locks. In Sept.1997 it became a National Historic Landmark.. the beautiful schooner Victory chimes..along with her sister ship, The Pride of Baltimore II, a person can make reservations and spend a day sailing upon these glorious ships..

This coin minted in 1948 was the only year that seperate coinage was minted bearing the archipeligo's name. - How great for me to find a ship coin that also has the obverse bust of France's Marianne--which I love and also collect--last vestige of France in North America
View Coin 1915 Ca HK-409 SC$1 Montana at Pan-Pac Expo MS63 SC$1 1915 CA HK-409 MONTANA AT PAN-PACIFIC PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION NGC MS 63 There are many gorgeous SC$1's with ship themes that I hope to add to this set. This one is from the 1915 World's Fair--also called the Pan-Pacific Expo because it was held to honor the completion of the Panama canal. It also was important to showcase the recovery of San Francisco following the 1906 Great Quake. - I enjoy the fact that as a signature set I can set the parameters--I decided the second I saw this beauty that ship's prows were allowed to be included..

View Coin 2006 Bermuda $3 Constellation PF68UCAM Bermuda $3 2006 Constellation NGC MS 68 UCAM From the "Bermuda Triangle" series of coins commemorating ships lost at sea in that mysterious place. The Constellation was a 4-masted schooner that had a cargo of cooking oil, Johnny Walker whiskey and pharmaceuticals among other things. The ship was found in the 1990's and became controversial because the drugs ended up being a large quantity of Morphine. The Constellation story was the inspiration for Peter Benchley's book and subsequent movie-"The Deep" - another unique aspect of this set are the many different shapes of coins......triangular coins with ships were also minted in the mid 1990's by Bermuda, playing on the mystery of the infamous Bermuda Triangle
View Coin 1975 Barbados Gold $100 PF65 UCAM BARBADOS G$100 1975FM OLIVE BLOSSOM NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo my first gold coin for this collection...a beauty whose obverse celebrates the 350th anniversary of British settlement, the reverse has a British warship with full sails and flags atop the masts with the Union Jack can be made out under close inspection - My first gold coin for this collection. I think I like the look of business strike gold better than proof strikes
View Coin 1972 Jamaica G$20 10th Anniversary PF68 JAMAICA G$20 1972 INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY NGC PF 68 A gorgeous gold $20 coin celebrating Jamaicas 10th Anniversary of independence in 1972. The reverse has 3 ships from Columbus second expedition to the new world..the Nina, the Cardera and the San Juan.In 1494 a violent hurricane struck the fleet and all of the fleet were sunk... only Columbus's favorite ship-the Nina- survived - this gold coin has a very red/gold color to it...try as I might I can't seem to get a picture that looks like the coin does in hand
View Coin 1993 Bahamas S$5 Sailing Ship PF68UCam BAHAMAS S$5 1993 SAILING SHIP NGC PF 68 ULTRA CAMEO Living on the east coast, the Bahamas have become one of my wife and I's favorite places to go in Jan-Feb to help break the winter monotony. Often the price is cheaper than a trip to Florida for a week{if I stay out of the casinos} a simple but attractive coin with a Spanish Galleon,a marlin and a flamingo... - a simple and nice design..I really like the marlin being added to what otherwise would have been a pretty plain reverse
View Coin 1968 Argentina 5P-AT'd ARGENTINA 5P 1968 NGC MS PrAg this coin was bodybagged for artificial toning--I had suspected it was the case, but thought it was worth a shot--I hope to locate a nice BU or proof to replace this one, but for now it is still a nice little coin.. - unslabbed coin in a body bag, nonetheless an attractive coin in both color and design
View Coin 1989 Nicaragua S10KC PF68UCAM NICARAGUA S10KC 1989 DISCOVERY OF NICARAGUA NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo Another tribute coin to Columbus' discoveries of the Americas. Columbus discovered what is now Nicaragua--the largest country of Central America-- on his fourth Expedition in 1502. - a tough part of the world to find sailing ship coins..many that I have found are tributes to Columbus
View Coin 1977 Bermuda G$100 Deliverance PF67UCAM G$100 1977 BERMUDA DELIVERANCE NGC PF 67 ULTRA CAMEO The Deliverance was constructed on the island of Bermuda from pieces of the shipwrecked Sea Venture. Captained by Lord De La Warr {of whom Delaware is named} finally arrived at their original destination-the Jamestown colony in 1610--just in time, as the previous 2 harsh winters had seen 80% of the settlers die of starvation and sickness. Bolstered with new colonists and supplies the colony finally began to take hold. - this is the much much rarer no mintmark {no chi} variety
View Coin 1977 Bermuda G$50 Sloop PF69UCAM G$50 1977 BERMUDA SLOOP NGC PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO a sloop is a favorite boat for pleasure sailing. I personally go sailing on a sloop several times a year with a friend. The triangular foresail and singular headsail on the lone mast make it capable of sailing upwind. By a series of easing the foresail and tacking back and forth it is able to zigzag it's way into the wind - The second of the 3 coin set. This set missing the mintmark has less than 500 minted
View Coin 2000 Bermuda S$1 Tall Ships PF68UCAM S$1 2000 BERMUDA TALL SHIPS NGC PF 68 ULTRA CAMEO a wonderful tribute coin to the 2000 voyage of a Tall Ships regatta that left Southhampton in England. They sailed to Italy, then Cadiz Southern Spain, crossed the Atlantic- stopping in Bermuda before going to the US, Canada and finishing their journey in the Netherlands at Amsterdam. - easily one of my favorites...the ship design on this coin would make a great regular issue design
View Coin 1974FM Bahamas 25C PF68UC BAHAMAS 25C 1974FM NGC PF 68 ULTRA CAMEO The Bahamas were initially discovered by Columbus and their sailing tradition continues today. The catamaran class ship has been a favorite for recreation and competition racing for many years-in fact, the first Bahamian regatta was held on Exuma, Bahamas in 1954 and was won by a catamaran... - a wonderful design-especially for a regular issue coinage design. This is a scarce silver proof of the regular 25c design struck in cuni..
View Coin 1992 Bermuda S$1 Olympic Sailing PF68UCAM S$1 1992 BERMUDA OLYMPIC SAILING NGC PF 68 ULTRA CAMEO Sailing has been an Olympic sport since the 1900 olympics held in Paris. Traditionally the US, UK and the Scandanavian countries have won the most overall medals in sailing events - The nicest olympic coin design I have seen-although I may be a bit biased. Great depiction of the competition of sailing --with an olympic flag insert

After mapping the coastline much farther south than Asia was known to extend, he surmised that it was not Asia at all but a new continent.. - another coin with a prtuguese explorer-Amerigo Vespucci--I love the Portuguese cross on the sails..

View Coin 2004 France 1/4 Euro Silver Champlain FRANCE - PART 5 S1/4E 2004 SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN NGC MS 67 Sister coin to the 2004 Canada dollar celebrating the first French settlement. This honors Champlain and has a front view of the ship..a superb gem example with glass like surfaces - I know that the photos are unusual for this coin. The Special Proof finish creates a total mirror where if light does not come from the side the details disappear. This is this best idea I could come up with, and I think it looks pretty cool.
View Coin 1934 Estonia 1 KROON ESTONIA KROON 1934 NGC AU 55 Estonia has a viking tradition dating back to the early middle ages. Estonians learned early on how to build ships to withstand the rough and open waters of the Baltic and North Seas. - love these dragonheaded viking ships...some may think its nuts to pay for slabbing for a $10 coin but it feels more inclusive in the set when slabbed..
