Peace Silver Dollars 1921-1935
Owner:
NiceCoins
Set Description:
There are 24 regular strike peace dollars from 1921 through 1935S. The 1921 was struck in high relief. Maybe from neglect or just lack of interest the meticulous craftsmanship that went into the making of the Morgan dollars was just not present while the peace dollars were struck. Thus, many peace dollars are characterized by figure ground distinctions that are not distinct, rather they tend to blend into one another and even with sharp distinctions on one part of a coin the other parts seem to blend together.
When I look at peace dollars I examine overall quality and evenness of strike, bag and other marks on the coin especially on the face and neck, the detail in the locks of hair especially near liberty’s cheek and over her ear, and luster. I don’t have any rainbow toned coins, however, I do have some that are golden and a few that are toned around the rim. For my own descriptive purpose I group my coins as follows: (1927S); (1921, 1925S); (1924S, 1934S, 1927D); (1928 VAM3, 1934D, 1922S, 1923S); (1922D, 1926S, 1926D, 1928); 1923D, 1934, 1935, 1935S); 1924, 1925, 1923); (1922, 1926).
The 5 most rare by original population with the first listed most rare are: 1928, 1927, 1927S, 1934, 1921. I find the following more interesting. The 5 most rare by PCGS slab at MS64 and higher are: 1934S (738 coins in slab), 1924S (1164), 1927D (1188), 1927S (1275), 1925S (1604). The 5 most rare by NGC slab at MS64 and higher are: 1934S (367), 1927D (734), 1924S (805), 1927 (871), 1934 (880).
