Set Description:
Die varieties and states of Morgan Dollars available in DMPL and PL condition.
Coins of extra special interest in the collection are the 1882-O/S, 1886-O, 1892-O, 1893-O, 1894, 1896-O, 1897-O, 1900, 1901, 1901-S, 1903-S, 1904, and 1904-S, as prohibitively rare prooflikes. Additionally, exceptional specific VAM prooflike rarities here include 1879-S VAM-52, 1884 VAM-4, 1886 VAM-17, 1888-O VAM-9 and 1891 VAM-2, with the 1884 being the only known VAM-4 (or VAM-3 even) DMPL example, the 1888-O the runaway finest VAM-9 specimen in existence at MS66 DMPL, and the VAM-2 of the 1891 at PCGS MS64 DMPL the finer of the only two known DMPLs of the Top 100 variety and in the highest condition available for the date.
Unfortunately, this presentation only affords a single slot for each date and mintmark. So one needs to determine which variety/state candidate is most interesting from among several for some of these.
The collection also has very interesting specimens currently in ANACS holders, among them great rarities like the 1887-S/S in DMPL and the unique 1887/6-O in MS62PL. But they are not candidates for inclusion here.
A special analysis on DMPL rarity, with regard to the PCGS and NGC population reports (dates only - no consideration to varieties):
Three dates have no uncirculated DMPL representation. They are 1884-S, 1893-S and 1903-S.
Four of the remaining dates do have DMPLs at NGC [indictated populations in parentheses] but none recognized at PCGS. They are 1896-S (2), 1902 (4), 1904-S (2) and 1921-S (2).
Similarly, four dates do have populations [again in parentheses] at PCGS but none graded by NGC. They are 1892-S (1), 1893 (4), 1894-O (3) and 1901 (1).
