This type set is a work in progress that will never be completed. My goal is to populate the set with choice coins that are solid for the grade, are original and that have superior eye appeal. Whether this means superbly toned, lustrous, high grade MS pieces or gunky, dark, mid-grade circulated pieces does not matter. The common theme must be eye appeal.
The descriptions of the coins will vary from purely technical, to anecdotal, through an analysis of the artistic merit contained within the issue. While I would like to take some credit for the artistic insight, the truth is that much of this information is liberally taken from the greatest numismatic book ever written. The tome in question is "Numismatic Art In America: Aesthetics of United States Coinage" by Cornelius Vermeule. The book is out of print, but if you are fortunate enough to come across a copy I would strongly suggest that you buy it, read it and read it again. It is that good.
Please enjoy the set as it grows and changes.
