Owner's Description

The note selected for the Banco de la Republica is an example of the ‘20 pesos oro’ issued from 1966 to 1983 (p409). This is a common note and readily available in high grade, but is included here as it features Francisco Jose de Caldas on the front. More information on the importance of Caldas’ role in securing independence is included in the entry for the Banco de Caldas. However, it is his contribution as a scientist, which is commemorated on this note by the inclusion of the globe, this is a reference to his wide ranging travels made in an attempt to understand the natural world and he is often referred to as the first Colombian scientist. I found it interesting that he also spent some time with Alexander von Humboldt who, as a scientist myself, I was familiar with and suggests that more research in this area is needed! The back of the note features a number of spectacular artefacts exhibited in the Museum of gold in Bogota – one of the places to visit on my bucket list.
