Owner's Description

The year 1954 saw a major jump in the production of proof sets numbering 233,300. The year also saw a major improvement in quality of proof Franklins. Two major improvements the U.S. Mint incorporated was the use of different packaging. The mint moved from the brittle cellophane to a more durable, softer plastic envelope. Like their earlier versions though the new packaging material was still inadequate for long term storage of coins as it reacted with the metals. Coin dipping was tried as the Franklin displayed a dark purple reaction to the newer envelope but dipping only made it worse. The second major improvement was the mint backed off repolishing its dies so harshly and so frequently. Hairlines still presented a problem but not to the degree as previous years. Higher grade brilliant gems are still worthy of the hunt. Cameo’s are becoming more prevalent than the previous years and Ultra Cameo’s are still very very rare.
