Owner's Description

Newfoundland 1899 20 cents
Krause ID: KM#4
Mintage: 125,000
Weight: 4.7127 gr.
Composition: .925 Silver .1401 oz. ASW

This is an exceptionally nice example of the Newfoundland series of .925 silver 20 cents coinage. The obverse shows Queen Victoria. Most Newfoundland coins experienced extensive circulation. Newfoundland coinage is fairly difficult to find in the higher grades due to low mintages and the fact that hard coinage was preferred over paper money from 1865 thru 1947 due to two bank failures.

NGC gave this coin XF-45. This coin appears to be a solid XF, the leaves and the braided hair of the obverse are the high points of the coin and are always the first to show wear and this coin shows only minor wear and circulation. There is still some luster especially on the obverse which made it difficult to get a good photo due to the reflective surface. Newfoundland coins in this nice condition are the exception to the rule.
