Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC®) Announces Upcoming Display of Brasher Doubloon and Others at ANA’s World’s Fair of Money.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC®) will be unveiling a remarkable display of rare and important coins and medals at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia, Pa., August 7 - 11, 2012.

The most anticipated coin on display is Walter Perschke’s Brasher Doubloon, the first United States gold coin, valued at $10 million. Recently graded and encapsulated by NGC as MS 63, this coin is believed to be the finest of just seven Brasher Doubloons known. Shortly after he purchased it in 1979, Perschke sent the Brasher Doubloon on a traveling exhibit, but it has now been many years since the coin was last displayed publicly.

“We’ve displayed some of the most renowned coins and collections at the World’s Fair of Money in the past,” said Mark Salzberg, chairman of NGC. “But the Perschke Brasher Doubloon is undoubtedly the most important coin we have ever exhibited.”

Also on display, and of great historical significance, are the US Mint Medals Presented to Mint Director Robert M. Patterson, the director of the United States Mint. Appointed by President Andrew Jackson, Patterson was director from 1835 to 1851, and acquired these medals during his tenure: the “very first medal” struck to commemorate the introduction of steam power to the coining process, a gilt copper steam coinage medal and an impressive medal presented to Patterson in honor of his service. The display will also include the wooden box and paper envelope that held two of the medals, and a letter dated January 8, 1836, signed by Secretary of State John Forsythe, transmitting Patterson’s commission.

The set includes all 50 coins acknowledged in the book of the same title, written by numismatists Eric Jordan and John Maben, all graded 70 by NGC and encapsulated in NGC’s EdgeView® Holder.
