1988-D Lincoln Memorial Cent - *1988 Birth-Year Collection*

“The Denver minted issues in this set hold double-significance. Not only are they from my birth-year, but also minted in Denver, my home and native state, Colorado.”

"The bubbling texture on the coin is a common result of a problematic plating process used by the US Mint until at least 1988. It involves a mix of improperly washed planchets, contaminated plating material and plating at the wrong temperatures. -- Cents of this era have gas bubbles trapped underneath the copper plating that welled upward when the coins were struck. There are scores of these in circulation, and in fact extremely difficult to avoid completely in some issues; especially in D mint coins from 1983-1988. For this particular era, it is nearly impossible to find cents without this effect to some minor degree." -- coppercoins (Coin Community)
