The 1883 three cent nickel is one of the most overlooked coins in the series. NGC shows their population of this coin at 0 with only 27 graded higher. PCGS also shows a low population with this AU showing 6 and again with only 27 higher. With a total mintage of 4000 for circulation and over 6000 in proof condition it is much easier to find a proof coin instead of a mint state item. Also, after review of several NGC registry sets, the only other three cent nickel was a high grade in the three cent registry set. There might be more but I cannot find them. That leaves a total of 2 in all of the NGC registries.Most of the pricing entities show the coin at a much lower value that what the coin can be purchased. In most cases Numismedia and PCGS pricing guides show the values at two to three times less than market value. This is easy to prove by researching the archives of several of the larger auction houses.
