B-9, BB-121, R.5. This is a scarce die marriage that is usually found in lower grades. In fact, prior to the appearance of this example, the variety was unknown in Mint State grades, to the best of our knowledge. The Cardinal Collection contained an AU58 example that was described as tied for finest known of the variety. A few faint scratches on the obverse of this example prevent an even higher numerical grade. The surfaces have frosty luster with pleasing ivory color that is splashed by deeper gold and steel toning. Not only is this piece probably the finest known for the variety, it is a top rate 1798 silver dollar among the entire population of the date.
