In 1836 the mint replaced the labor intensive screw press with the Thonnelier steam press. This new press purportedly struck 1,200 reeded edge halves on November 8, 1836. It's been speculated that more were struck at a later date.
Although the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar is listed as Judd-57 in "United States Pattern, Trial, and Experimental Pieces" by J. Hewitt Judd, it's long been considered a regular issue coin for some time.
