Owner Comments:

1861 was the final year of coin production at the Charlotte Mint. The reality of the Civil War meant that gold supplies would be low, production cut short, and many minted pieces would be melted down or lost to attrition. Mint state examples of this year are difficult to find at any price, as they are prized by many styles of collector. This particular coin has beautiful yellow-gold color and satiny luster. The strike is strong, and displays the die crack along the tops of AMER on the reverse - a potential marker of being struck under Confederate control of the Mint. That's sure to get any collector's history tastebuds tingling. This piece is of inestimable importance to the history of coinage in our country, and specifically to southern gold coinage.
