Owner Comments:

This is the very rare Terminal Die State example of the 1799 8x5 stars configuration dollar. Struck from heavily clashed dies, the obverse is extensively cracked, with a pair of arcing die cracks that meet at Liberty's neck. These die cracks created a die bulge that weakened the strike on the reverse field stars and clouds between STATES and OF. The loss of detail probably prevented this coin from receiving an XF grade.

Only 1 in every 21 1799 dated dollars was struck with the 8x5 star configuration. Of nearly 100 pictured examples of 8x5 dollars sold by Heritage, only 2 coins were of the Terminal Die State variety.
