WB-101. Obverse of 1840 paired with the large letter reverse of 1838. Somehow the managers in New Orleans didn't realize the shift in the position of the mint mark from front to back meant that there would be no mint mark on this coin. A rare variety in mint state (W&B R7+). W&B state that they have never seen an example of this coin without die cracks on the reverse. For a moment I thought this might be one. But there is a crack from the rim through the final A in AMERICA on into the eagle's left wing and body. Another remarkable coin provided to me by Jim O'Donnell. Tied with one other at the top of the PCGS rankings, and bettered by one MS-65 at NGC.
