Rare 1840 (O) 50c. A coin minted in New Orleans using an 1840 obverse die and an older 1838 reverse die originally used on the 1838 capped bust half. In 1838 and 1839 the mint mark on the half dollar was on the obverse - thus the lack of a mint mark on the 38' reverse. 1840 was the first year that seated liberty half dollars were minted in New Orleans. Subsequent issues - later in 1840 and in following years - used the 1840 reverse which has the O mint mark. A very special variety!
