Owner Comments:
THIS COIN: Gorgeous mint-fresh satiny luster with a whisper of gold toning. Magnificent eye appeal. Type I obverse; Type II reverse.
BACKGROUND: Despite a production of 509,000 business strikes, this date and mint mark is the rarest of all Trade Dollar business strikes in mint state, even scarcer than the 1878-CC according to Q. David Bowers ("Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, A Complete Encyclopedia"). Known varieties include Type I/I and I/II with Type I/II thought to be much more scarce. A Double Die Reverse variety also exists though not listed as an additional slot in the NGC Registry.
