Owner Comments:
WB-103. Small wide broken mintmark. The variety was further broken down in the new monograpgh into two catagories WB-3 and WB-4. This coin is a WB-3. The date is high, and the minor die scratches in Liberty's gown near the shield are present. No sign of a die crack from Liberty's foot to the 13th star though. All stars have been recut. Unusual double outline to eagle's lower neck and left wing on the reverse (DDR?) not mentioned by Bugert. After some of the spectacular earlier coins (1850, 1860, 1864) the eye appeal of this coin suffers by comparison. But it is a gem in its own right with no marks, no signs of wear and a decent strike. Bought from Larry Whitlow May 2004.
