Owner Comments:

In his 1993 treatise entitled Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers writes that a few bags of 1895-S dollars were released by the San Francisco Mint in 1942, and some continued to be paid out through the early 1950s. Many of these circulated through the channels of commerce or went to casinos. By the mid 1950s, '95-S dollars were considered to be rare. In the 1970s, the Redfield estate contained an estimated 1,000 coins of this issue, most of which were heavily bagmarked or damaged by a coin counting machine.

Bowers estimates that between 3,500 and 8,000 1895-S pieces exist in Uncirculated grades. The vast majority of these are in the lower grades of Mint State. MS65 or better specimens are truly rare, with an estimate of 50 to 100 extant pieces. Premium and Superb Gems are virtually unobtainable. Prooflike coins are scarce, and Deep Mirror Prooflike examples are about twice as scarce as regular Prooflikes.
