Owner Comments:

This piece is part of my "all mints" $5 gold collection. The half eagle or $5 gold piece was the only denomination that was minted at all seven of the United States mints. Those mint were located at the following locations:

Charlotte, North Carolina ("C" mint mark)
Carson City, Nevada ("CC" mint mark)
Denver, Colorado ("D" mint mark, starting in 1907)
Dahlonega, Georgia ("D" mint, from 1838 to 1861)
New Orleans, Louisiana ("O" mint mark)
San Francisco, California ("S" mint mark)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (no mint mark except on the nickel during World War II and in modern times.)

In modern times an eighth mint now operates at West Point, New York, which has a "W" mint mark. That facility produces commemorative $5 gold coins on a regular basis.

The 1886-S half eagle is a common date and mint mark combination. The coin pictured above is especially nice for the MS-64 grade with attrative color and surfaces.
