Owner Comments:

O.120a R2. Kaufman. Tied for finest known 1827 half dollar of any die marriage. Obtained by private treaty from David Lawrence Rare Coins on 7/20/2010. "Wow! An amazing gem from the well known Kaufman Collection. Just one at PCGS and NGC. As a type very few Bust halves have achieved the elusive MS67 grade and this beauty will make a fine addition to a top-noth set," per David Lawrence cataloger on website. Previously sold In Heritage CSNS Auction in April 2009, Lot 2438. Subsequently resold at Bowers and Merena Rarities Auction in Orlando in January, 2010, Lot 363.
Per Heritage Cataloger, "Ex: Kaufman. O-120a, R.3. A prominent area of die line defects appears in the area near the rim left of the date, while the late-state reverse is attributed by a large die crack above UNITED STATES. Stars 6 and 13 show recutting. This Superb Gem, pedigreed to the Kaufman Collection, shows superlative luster emanating from beneath a light layer of gold toning over the otherwise silver surfaces. the strike is bold, save for the centrils of a couple of the stars, and as expected for the grade there are no remotely mentionable contact marks. Another finest certified, and almost certainly the finest known: The Herrman reference tops out at MS65."
