THIS COIN: Tied for FINEST KNOWN. This is a very high luster specimen with a thin light tan patina. The design features are well struck. Surfaces are extremely smooth and preserved. An exceptional example.
BACKGROUND: Owing to a strong commercial demand for trade with the Orient, some 2,549,000 coins were struck in 1874 at the San Francisco Mint. Because most were exported to China, where they were either melted or chopmarked, Mint State coins are quite scarce. GEM quality examples are exceedingly rare.
