Owner Comments:

This is the first of two burnished silver eagles struck by the West Point Mint in 2008. This coin was an error by the Mint on the reverse side with some older dies not being changed over at the proper time. To my knowledge this is the only error coin in the silver eagle set that started in 1986. When the Mint found out what happened, they changed the old dies that they had been using and now they had two different coins out on the market in 2008. The coin is rare as it has a low mintage. The 2012 Red Book acknowledges there may be 47,000 of these coins struck in error by the Mint and according to NGC(10/24/11) 7,177 have been graded so far at MS70. This silver eagle has the second lowest mintage of all silver eagle ever made (both MS and PF). This coin also has the lowest mintage of all mint state coins in the silver eagle series to date(10/24/11). Only the 1995 W in proof state has a lower mintage of 30,125. in the entire silver eagle series. I think this coin is positioned to increase in value as time goes on, it my #4 in this set. To ID this coin see the letter U on the reverse, the stars on the reverse and the mark between silver and one on the reverse. Then compare it to a regular strike of 2008 or later. See links for a better and larger photos of these three points. Do the copy and paste thing.
