Often, in order for a nation to realize its maximum potential, it needs leaders with vision. Under the leadership of Dwight D Eisenhower and John F Kennedy, with continuing support from presidents Johnson and Nixon, this nation arguably realized its greatest technological feat in landing men on the moon. Even more remarkable is the fact that from the forming of NASA to the day we landed on the moon was only 11 years. Commemorating the moon landing on July 20, 1969, the reverse of this MS-67, 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar features the mission patch of “Apollo 11”. Emphasizing that “we came in peace for all mankind”, the reverse depicts an eagle, representing America, landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons. The obverse of the Eisenhower Dollar honors the man who started us on the road to the moon and features a bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Unfortunately, the Eisenhower Dollar was never popular with the public as a circulating coin. The age-old complaint of the dollar coin being too heavy and large doomed the Eisenhower Dollar to a short run of just 7 years from 1971 to 1978. However, during that run there were two different reverses and compositions. These features combined with several die varieties make the Eisenhower Dollar a collectible and diverse series.
