Owner Comments:

This 1802 “narrow date” silver dollar is listed as Bolender variety 1802-6 and Bowers variety BB-241. According to David Bowers this piece not only the most common 1802 variety but also the most die variety among the all of the early dollars from 1798 to 1803. I was surprised by this statement because through the years I have viewed the 1802 as an “unusual date.” I have seen far more 1799 and 1800 silver dollars than I have 1802 dated coins. Nevertheless I will take Mr. Bowers word for this at least rate this variety as “common.”

The coin pictured above features original surfaces with sharp detail on all of the devices, including the hair to the left of Ms. Liberty’s forehead. The colors are a mixture of gold, gray and blue with a fair amount of luster showing below them. This is by a reasonable margin the sharpest Bust dollar in my collection. Now if it could only shrink and became an early half dime …
