Owner Comments:

PCGS graded MS 65 RB, EAC MS65
Variety: N-2, EDS, CC#2
Ex: Adler, Mehl, Newcomer, Mehl, Clarke, Naftzger

This coin has enough original color on the obverse to merit the RB designation. There are only a few trivial spots and ticks. It is mostly well struck, including most of the stars. The luster is very strong.

I bought this coin in February 2009 (Super Bowl Sunday) in the Goldbergs' sale of the Ted Naftzger collection. I had gotten settled at the auction, and already made a good purchase on an 1831 cent. This one hurt a little. Although it was the first 1833 in the sale, I had been shut out of the 1832s and didn't want to miss an 1833. I went a bit past my preset maximum to get it. This set a new price record (matched once later in the sale) for a coin in my collection. Another 65RB and a 66BN 1833 sold for less, but I liked this one better.

From the Goldberg's catalog:

The obverse is lustrous bright mint red fading to bluish steel brown on the highpoints, nearly two-thirds of the red remaining. The reverse is satiny bluish steel with faded mint color in protected areas. Great eye appeal with only a few microscopic marks, including a faint spot of darker toning over the E in UNITED. Sharply struck EDS with the reverse rotated 35 degrees CW. Called MS65 choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20929. Bland says MS65+ and tied for CC#1. Our grade is MS65.
