In 1907 the silver Peso was reduced in size & weight to .800 Silver, 20.0 Grams. The obverse and reverse design is the same as the 1903 through 1906 Peso. Business strikes of the reduced size & weight Peso were struck at the San Francisco Mint from 1907 through 1912. A total of 43.1 million small Pesos were struck between 1907 and 1912. The majority of these were held in reserve in the Manila treasury as backing for Philippine paper money. In 1942 16 million silver Pesos were crated and thrown into Manila Bay to avoid seizure by the invading forces of Japan. Over the years escalating silver prices have caused many of the surviving pieces to be melted for their silver content. The weight and size of this coin make it particularly prone to bag marks so Choice BU and GEM specimens are rare and a challenge to collect. The NGC population for all 1907 through 1912 Pesos graded MS-63 and above is only 71 coins. The 2008- 2009 Allen catelog identifies the combined population (from the three major grading services) of 1907 through 1912 Pesos graded MS-63 and above to be only 206 coins.

The 1908 S Peso has a NGC population of 30 coins in MS-63 with only 12 coins graded higher.

This specimen is a lusterous, fully struck, untoned example of the reduced size and weight Peso.
