Owner Comments:

1804 25C VF30 PCGS. B-1, R3. Population (PCGS --/--, NGC 22/16).

Even though quarter dollar production began in 1796, the second issue of this denomination was not delivered until 1804. The 1804 marks the first year of the Heraldic Eagle design and one of just 6,738 pieces struck, few of which survive in grades above Fine. The production of Quarters was minimal in the early years of the U.S. Mint, since depositors preferred more convenient Silver Dollars. The 1804 is a famous rarity, by far the rarest date within the five year Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type. The Browning-1 variety, with the 4 in the date low and a die cut between stars 8 and 9 seen on all examples. For years the scarcity of the 1804 Quarter has been eclipsed by the better known and single-year type from 1796, a coin of similar mintage and rarity. Although not as famous as the 1796 quarters, the 1804 quarters are still considered to be a well known rarity and most times is not as readily available as the 1796 quarter.

This is a very beautiful mid-grade coin with pleasing original dove-gray toning that lightens somewhat over the highpoints. The well centered impression retains ample definition for the grade.
