NGC graded MS 65 RB
Variety: N-9, die state a
This is a really nice 1846 cent. It has great luster, interrupted by a few patches of slightly darker toning behind the portrait. There is much more original color than is apparent in the photograph. It is a nice example of the scarce early die state.
I purchased this cent from Chris McCawley at the Summer 2008 Baltimore show. It had previously appeared in a January 2005 Heritage auction.
From the Heritage catalog:
1846 1C Small Date MS65 Red and Brown NGC. N-9, R.2.
A scarce early die state with prominent die lines (as made) throughout the reverse field. A nicely struck piece with considerable Red color on the reverse. A faint luster graze on the cheekbone, otherwise quite pleasing.
Population: 2 in 65 Red and Brown, none finer (12/04).(#1866)
