Owner Comments:

NGC graded MS 66 BN, EAC MS60
Variety: N-2, EDS, CC#4
Ex: Newcomb, Starr, Rasmussen

This coin is not as flashy as many of finest middle date cents, but one gets the distinct impression of quality from it nevertheless. It is nicely lustrous and sharply struck, except for a few stars. There is only one tiny contact mark, notable only because it is on the cheek. There is evidence of die bounce profile doubling at the forehead and tip of the nose. The reverse is especially sharp and appealing.

I bought this coin in June 2005 from Heritage's 'Buy now / Make an offer' selections. My offer was hundreds less than the hammer price from its appearance five months earlier in Heritage's sale of the Wes Rasmussen collection.

The Heritage catalog description says:

1830 1C Large Letters MS66 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-2, Early Die State, R.2. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees counterclockwise. This example is fourth or fifth finest known for the variety. Many Mint State examples that have been reported are old listings of coins that have not been seen for decades. In some cases, they are different examples that have simply not come out of hiding. In others, these listings represent duplicate coins in the Census list, and in still others, they are coins that are actually lower grade than originally described. This coin is sharply struck with a trace of doubling on Liberty's nose and forehead. It is fully lustrous with lovely chestnut brown surfaces and slightly deeper toning. An exceptional example for the connoisseur. Both sides have similarities to the Newcomb plate coin, but we have not been able to make a positive match.
