Set Description
ELIASBERG REUNITED COLLECTION: Building a Blue-Ribbon Collection on a Blue Collar Budget.

The only collection of United States coins ever formed which was complete by denomination, date and mint was that of the late Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Expanding on the already immense collection assembled decades earlier by John M. Clapp, which included many coins obtained directly from the various mints in the year of issue, Eliasberg purchased the Clapp Collection in its entirety and worked with several dealers to fill in the remaining gaps. His quest began in 1925, and it wasn't until a quarter century later that Mr. Eliasberg secured the final coin needed, the unique 1873-CC No Arrows dime.

This collection features none of his great rarities, yet it shows how a working person on a budget can still build an historic bond by reuniting coins originally held in the family of collections assembled by America's Greatest Numismatist.

Set Goals
ELIASBERG PEDIGREED UNITED STATES TYPE SET

USA Minor Coins Type Set consisting of coins pedigreed to the family of collections by the great Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., the only collector to build a complete collection of US Coins by date and mint. Collection will include at least one of each major copper, nickel and silver coin type from 1800 through the time Louis Eliasberg completed his great collection in the 1950s, with every coin attributed to the Eliasberg pedigree.

As an added bonus, this collection also features United States Commemorative Half Dollars and a selection of US Gold coins as examples of design and mint, each pedigreed to the Louis Eliasberg, Sr. collection. The collection also contains a US/Philippines proof coin as an example of type from that series, and an Eliasberg-pedigreed California Gold 'Coat of Arms' to create a nexus to my home state. For some coins, examples of both Proof and Mint State examples are included, as well as a few duplicates which are held for future trades. For some coin types, such as Morgan and Peace Dollars, we are attempting to collect an Eliasberg coin from each branch mint, simply because doing so sounds like a cool subset idea.

For modern issues minted after Mr. Eliasberg completed his collection in the 1950s, and older issues for which I have yet to acquire an Eliasberg, Sr. pedigree, I have chosen to include coins pedigreed to his son, Louis Eliasberg, Jr., to further expand the theme of this "Eliasberg Reunited Collection".

In addition to Eliasberg pedigreed coins, this set also contains regular and Library Edition auction catalogs (signed by Dave Bowers and others involved with the sale), two tickets to an actual Eliasberg auction, magazine and newspaper articles from Life, Look, and hobby publications showing Eliasberg with his coins on display, the Q. David Bowers biography "Eliasberg: King of Coins", original press photographic prints of Mr. Eliasberg with his collection on display (including the photo of Eliasberg in this introduction), and personal receipts, signed letters and miscellany belonging to Louis Eliasberg, Jr. and related to the auctioning of his father's collection in the 1990s.

Note-1: All PCGS Coins in this collection are pedigreed to the Great American Numismatist: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Note-2: All NGC Coins in this collection are pedigreed to either Louis Eliasberg Sr. or to his son, Louis Eliasberg, Jr., as noted in the collection listing.

Note-3: Photo credit for the image of Louis Eliasberg, Sr. (above) goes to William L. Klender of the Baltimore Sunday Sun Magazine, April 24, 1962. This original print is part of our collection. The handwritten caption notes that Mr. Eliasberg's cufflinks are made from $10 gold pieces. (NOTE: Photo temporarily not displayed)

Note 4: The Eliasberg Reunited Master Collection presently includes 16 raw coins pedigreed to Louis Eliasberg, Sr. (with original Bowers & Merena invoices) which have never been sent in for grading.

Note-5: The collection also contains two non-PCGS/NGC coins: an 1857S Seated Liberty Half Dollar (WB-101) in Fine-15, housed in an older white ANACS slab, and a beautiful 1829/1827 Bust Half Dollar graded MS-61 in an ANACS older white small holder. Both are pedigreed to Louis Eliasberg, Sr. These are the only Eliasberg pedigreed ANACS small-white-holder coins that I've ever seen. If you know of another, please let me know.

Proof-like finish and remarkably detailed obverse for such a tiny planchet.
View Coin Draped Bust Large Cent United States 1C 1798 PCGS AG 3 BN Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr. This 200-plus year old coin is dark chocolate in color with legends and date visible. I never thought I'd own a coin that was minted in the George Washington administration, and I'm pleased to add this coin to the Eliasberg Reunited Custom Set. This coin was acquired in May 2014 and has not yet been imaged or sent to CAC.
View Coin Classic Head Large Cent United States 1C 1808 PCGS VG 8 BN Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr

This circulated chocolate brown Classic Head cent resides in an older PCGS green holder, and is the oldest coin currently in our Eliasberg pedigreed collection.
View Coin Coronet Large Cent - Original Head United States 1C 1837 PCGS AU 58 BN Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Old green PCGS holder with a CAC green bean. Looks MS63. Obverse die cracks throughout the stars. The scratch on the reverse through the 'T' in cent is on the holder, not the coin.
View Coin Coronet Large Cent - Modified Head United States 1C 1844/INV 184 N-2 PCGS AU 50 BN Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

1844/81 PCGS Old Green Holder, handsome chocolate brown example of this unusual overdate - actually the die sinker punched the 18 upside down and backwards, then punched the 18 in the correct position followed by the 44. I also own the Eliasberg non-overdate 1844 in NGC Fine-15, an unremarkable chocolate-looking coin.
View Coin Coronet Large Cent N-12 United States 1C 1847 N-12 ELIASBERG NGC VF 35 BN Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Nice chocolate brown example of this scarcer N-12 crosslet variety of what is otherwise a common date. The Eliasberg pedigree provides added interest, too.
View Coin Indian Head Cent United States 1C 1869 PCGS MS 63 RB Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Old green PCGS holder with a CAC green bean. A nice looking mostly red Indian Head coin, fully struck and deserving of an MS 64 grade today.
View Coin Lincoln Cent - VDB United States 1C 1909 VDB L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC MS 65 RD Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

A beautiful coin that is only missing an S mint mark for perfection. :)

View Coin Lincoln Cent - Steel United States 1C 1943 S L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC MS 67 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

As a child, I was fascinated by the "steel pennies" of 1943. This war cent has a hammered strike and is pristine and free of distracting marks.
View Coin Lincoln Cent - Shellcase United States 1C 1944 S L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC MS 65 RD Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

The mint returned to producing copper cents in 1944, using copper that was recovered from used shell cases on battleships and battlefields during World War II. On full red coins, the copper carries a slightly different color tone, and sometimes exhibits unusual toning or streaking, although this coin is nearly normal in color and fully red.
View Coin Lincoln Cent - Memorial Reverse United States 1C 1979 S TYPE 2 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC PF 68 RD ULTRA CAMEO Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

This coin is included in our 'Eliasberg Reunited' Custom Set to represent the modern copper plated cents. It carries the near perfect appearance of modern proofs, complete with full cameo and surfaces that are mark free to the naked eye.
View Coin Two Cent Piece United States 2C 1865 PCGS MS 62 RB Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

An attractive coin with a lot of red, this two cent piece would probably CAC, and perhaps grade MS63 at PCGS today. From the Bowers and Merena Sale of the Louis Eliasberg Collection in 1996, and still in it's original Old Green Holder.
View Coin Half Dime - With Arrows United States H10C 1854 O ARROWS PCGS AU 55 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr

A wonderfully toned Half Dime with fully original surfaces and not a trace of visible wear. Beautifully colorful, though my photographic skills have trouble catching it, and a proof like cameo effect on the reverse make the observer ask why this coin wasn't graded mint state. CAC likes it too, awarding this coin a coveted Gold Bean. Too bad my photography skills aren't good enough to fully capture the color and beauty of this coin.
View Coin Half Dime - No Arrows United States H10C 1858 O PCGS AU 58 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

A crusty old half dime for this crusty old coin collector, this coin has just the very slightest of wear, housed in an old green PCGS holder with a CAC green bean.
View Coin Half Dime -- Legend on Obverse (Proof Example) United States H10C 1870 PCGS PF 65 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr. -- From the Bowers and Merena sale of the Eliasberg Collection in 1996 (Lot 1029), this coin was described by Bowers as "Proof 66, Brilliant with whisper of champagne toning on the obverse, hints of blue on the reverse... Certainly this is one of the finer examples known." Graded PF65 by PCGS in 1996 (old green holder), the coin has not been photographed or sent to CAC, but the only uncertainty is whether it deserves a green sticker or the coveted gold football.
View Coin Half Dime -- Legend on Obverse (Proof Example Duplicate) United States H10C 1873 PCGS PF 64 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

From the Eliasberg auction catalog 5/96, plated as lot 1034: "Delicate champagne toning. A splendid specimen of the last issue of the series... Open D in UNITED. Mintage of 1873 Proof Half Dimes was 600, but many unsold pieces were melted at the mint on July 10, 1873."

Attractively toned. Not yet photographed.
View Coin Shield Nickel United States 5C 1873 CLOSED 3 ELIASBERG NGC MS 64 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Remarkably mark free for the grade, this flashy Shield Nickel is a borderline MS65, with a CAC sticker to prove it.
View Coin Shield Nickel - Proof United States 5C 1871 PCGS PF 65 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

We couldn't decide between this low mintage proof and the equally attractive 1873 circulation strike in our collection. So we decided to keep both. That's the beauty of NGC Custom Sets. One can make his own rules as he builds his collection. One can't make any more 1871 Proof Nickels, however, and the 960 coin low mintage of this issue makes it a keeper. This coin is housed in an older PCGS green holder.
View Coin Liberty Nickel -- No Cents United States 5C 1883 NO CENTS PCGS MS 64 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Nice CAC approved coin that would regrade a 64+ or an MS65 today. Louis Eliasberg reportedly had two rolls of these in his 1996 auction -- I own two of them -- and presumably his "first string" coin was a proof of this same issue.
View Coin Liberty Nickel -- With Cents United States 5C 1899 PCGS PF 66 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Flashy white gem Proof-66 Liberty Nickel from the last year in the 1800s, this coin has been stickered by CAC as solid for the grade. Louis Eliasberg collected by date and mint, but didn't always duplicate date and mint combinations by collecting both the proof and mint state examples for many issues. His preference for proof coins must have made for a great display of Liberty Nickels, since each coin in the series was available in proof, except the branch mint pieces from the year 1912.
View Coin Liberty Nickel - Duplicate United States 5C 1895 PCGS PF 64 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Mark free devices with a slight cameo effect highlight this CAC approved coin, which exhibits pale golden toning and is housed in an old green PCGS holder. Clearly a 65 by current grading standards, and a nice cameo effect, especially on the reverse.
View Coin Indian Head / Buffalo 5c (Type I) United States 5C 1913 TYPE 1 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC MS 65 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

Attractive gold toning, fully struck up, should cross to PCGS.
View Coin Indian Head / Buffalo 5c (Type II) United States 5C 1920 D NGC MS 64 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

The 1920-D is a scarce coin in all grades, but its reputation for rarity is confirmed by the unavailability of well struck high grade pieces. Although this coin is not quite fully brought up, the obverse is well defined with strong detailing on LIBERTY and the Indian's braid. The reverse is comparatively soft, especially on the bison's leg and shoulder, which is probably why it doesn't bump to MS65. Satiny luster penetrates the faint overlay of apricot-gray toning. As a pedigree identifiers, a thin planchet lamination is present below the bison's shoulder and three interesting rim cuds are visible between 1 and 4 o'clock.
View Coin Jefferson Nickel United States 5C 1961 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC PF 67 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

A brilliant proof Jefferson Nickel from only the second year in US Mint history with a date that looks the same right side up as upside down, the other being 1881 (represented in our collection by a beautifully toned proof dime). The next year where the numerals of the date will read the same upside down as right side up will be 6009, and it's unlikely that we will be able to acquire an Eliasberg of that date, so our "Upside Down Eliasberg" collection is now complete.
View Coin Seated Liberty Dime United States 10C 1881 PCGS PF 66 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Probably my favorite owned coin, this 1881 Seated Liberty Dime resides in a Proof 66 PCGS holder with a CAC sticker, but the beauty of the coin goes far beyond its technical grade. Only the photographs of this toned coin can convey the quality and beauty of this low mintage issue. I truly believe that this coin, if resubmitted, would upgrade to MS66+ or possibly MS67. Mintage: 975. Realized $1430 in the May 1996 Eliasberg sale, lot 1222. Sold again 1/4/2007 for $2760, Heritage FUN show (Orlando). Ex: William Dickinson Collection; Chapman Brothers; J.M. Clapp before Eliasberg.
View Coin Barber Dime United States 10C 1912 S ELIASBERG NGC MS 65 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr

Just a couple traces of color occur on this otherwise brilliant Barber dime. The design elements are exquisitely struck, and the satiny surfaces reveal only two or three hardly noticeable abrasions on Liberty's cheek, none of which detract from the overall eye appeal of this magnificent specimen which was minted in the same year that the Titanic sunk.
View Coin Barber Dime United States 10C 1916 BARBER PCGS AU 58 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

A nice Barber Dime, uncirculated in appearance, though likely not Eliasberg's 'first string' coin of this date and mint. This coin was aquired without premium for the pedigree and is our second Eliasberg coin of this date and mint. This dime is stickered by CAC for quality and original surfaces.

View Coin Roosevelt Dime - Silver United States 10C 1955 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC PF 67 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

A brilliant proof Roosevelt Dime, pedigreed to Louis Eliasberg's oldest son. By 1955, the senior Eliasberg has already completed his collection, and needed only to keep current with new releases from the mint.
View Coin Roosevelt Dime - Clad United States 10C 1979 S TYPE 2 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

When we began "Eliasberg Reunited", we didn't plan on including coins dated after the senior Eliasberg completed his collection in the 1950s, but inexpensive coins like this near perfect ultra cameo dime made the expansion of our collection irrestable. This coin is about as close to perfect as you can get, without paying 70-money for what is otherwise a common coin.
View Coin Barber Quarter Dollar United States 25C 1911 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC AU 55 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

Acquiring reasonably priced Barber coinage pedigreed to Louis Eliasberg can be a challenge, so we've included this Almost Uncirculated 1911 Half Dollar pedigreed to his oldest son, while we continue our search for a nice 50 cent piece pedigreed to the Senior eliasberg.
View Coin Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar Type 1 United States 25C 1917 TYPE 1 L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC AU 55 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

Lightly toned, excellent obverse detail on this coin which was likely a Full Head when it left the mint. Obverse marks about right for the grade, reverse with fewer marks but slightly more wear. Too bad that 7 in the date isn't a 6.

View Coin Washington Quarter - Silver United States 25C 1952 PCGS MS 66 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Another crusty coin, with nice strike and few marks. I also have a 1952 half dollar pedigreed to Eliasberg, with similar looks, probably from the same mint set. Both coins are stickered by CAC as solid for the grade. Can anyone tell me if this coin has the "re-engraved tail feathers"?

An almost uncirculated Denver Mint Barber Half Dollar that fills an illustrious spot in our collection, at least until we can acquire a coin pedigreed to the senior Eliasberg. While coining at the Denver Mint went smoothly, the San Francisco Mint had operations interrupted after the Great Earthquake and Fire in April of that year.
View Coin Walking Liberty Half Dollar United States 50C 1916 LOUIS EMIASBERG, SR. PCGS MS 65 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

A beautiful mostly-white coin with just a hint of gold, housed in an old green PCHS holder, this gem represents the first year of Walking Liberty half dollar production. Louis Eliasberg would have been 20 years old when this coin was minted.
View Coin Franklin Half Dollar United States 50C 1952 PCGS MS 65 FBL Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

Crust is this coin's middle name. She sports full bell lines and very few marks for the grade. I also have a 1952 quarter pedigreed to Eliasberg, with similar toning, probably from the same mint set. Both coins are CAC stickered for quality grade and original surfaces.

First year of the 90% Kennedy Half Dollar. Last year of the 90% Kennedy Half Dollar. It's hard to believe that the price of silver may soon overtake the numismatic value of these coins. This one won't go to the smelter, but I wonder how may will.

The 40% silver proof Kennedy's still have the look of quality coinage, unlike the clad issues in my opinion. On July 20, 1969 man landed on the moon. It was a time of pride for America. The look of this coin is something to be proud of as well, with a hammered strike and strong cameo.

View Coin Morgan Dollar (Carson City Mint) United States $1 1884 CC PCGS MS 66 PL Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.
