tig's Bio
My parents were big coin collectors as far back as I can remember. I didn’t pay much attention to the hobby when I was very young, but as I made it to my late teen’s I took a little interest in it and began helping them collect because I worked a lot of “cash register” jobs, and eventually I became aware a lot of people were handing me collectible coins, and either they didn’t know it or they just didn’t care. As I became older and graduated from college, I lost interest in collecting because of a wife, kids, career, the usual. I did revive the hobby with my mom after dad passed away about 10 years ago. It was something we could talk about and share.
Little did I realize that one day my kids would be grown, my wife and parents deceased, and I would inherit a lifetime of collecting. For years I didn’t even bother to see or care what was in all of those boxes in her basement. Now I have been though the collection twice and I really don’t know where to start, there are so many coins and sets. Proofs, Mint State, Silver, US Mint Sets, hundreds of old Morgan’s, halves, quarters, penny’s etc. So about a year ago I decided to start with NGC. I started reading about some of my parent’s collections and decided I needed help, a lot of help to understand and catalog what I had.
There is a tremendous amount for me to learn so I can pass on this collection, and the history of our country these coins represent, to my daughter. Maybe one-day she will pick the hobby up where I leave it off.
I will start with the Proof 70 UC American Silver Eagles. That was the collection mom and I were working on when she passed away a few years ago. I think it’s time I finish this collection, and I can’t think of a better place to start than the end of their collecting career. I’ll get to the other stuff later.
Let the games begin (again) as I feel a touch of numismatic fever coming on.
Thanks for the help NGC and its members,
Phil
