DurfCoins's Bio
My current status is a collector whom buys and sells coins and bullion. I am a member of the River Vale Coin and Collectibles Club here in North Bergen County and the Westchester County Coin Club in Westchester County, NY. I enjoy auctions, live and online.
Favorite coins are the Walking Liberty Half dollar, Peace dollar, modern and early commemoratives. I have attempted to gather certified proof sets, state quarters and Kennedy half dollars. I like the Barber series as well.
I started my coin collecting as a young man working as the local newspaper delivery boy. The year was 1966, 90% silver coins were still circulating freely. They were real easy to spot and that familiar ring was all that was needed to raise my head up. Soon I found myself spending my earnings at the local coin shop. Always seeking a bargain, I never knew what I might come home with.
Most of my coins at this time were circulated. After securing a job at the local Dairy Queen, the year was now 1968, silver became more frequent. I would substitute the non-silver coins for the silver ones. I soon had quite a stash of mostly silver dimes and quarters. There were a few half dollars. The half dollars were always far a few between.
I joined the USMC in 1971 and after returning home found that most of my stash was pilfered by my dear brothers. Oh well, easy come easy go!
I have since started to collect proof and uncirculated US mint issued sets. Along the way I also started to collect certified coins.
I still really like the feel of raw coins in my hands.
